A dynamic trumpet artist and educator, Christopher Scanlon, is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Northern Illinois University. He has performed in Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and across the United States, including the Vienna Musikverein, Philharmonie in Berlin, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Opera houses of Tokyo and Dubai and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City as a member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and Orquesta Sinfonica de Nuevo Leon. 

Dr. Scanlon has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Pops, Boston Lyric Opera, Singapore Symphony, US Coast Guard Band, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, New World Symphony, under the batons of Seiji Ozawa, John Williams, Kurt Mazur, Valery Gergiev and with soloists such as Joshua Bell, Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Daniil Trifonov and Andras Schiff. In New York City, Dr. Scanlon performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, and in Broadway theaters for Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, An American in Paris and Kiss Me Kate, with artists such as Josh Groban, Harry Connick Jr, Neil Patrick Harris, Hanson, Questlove, Patti Labelle, Rufus Wainwright, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kelli O’Hara, Natalia Lafourcade, Pedro Fernandez and on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Netflix’s Mozart in the Jungle. Dr. Scanlon founded Banda Nueva York, a cross-cultural, Mexican brass band whose original arrangements by Latin Grammy winner Julio Lizarraga can be heard on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube. 

Dr. Scanlon has been a featured soloist in Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano and Trumpet with Yuja Wang, Bach’s Second Brandenburg Concerto, Copland’s Quiet City, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets and the premiere of Russell Courter’s Atmospheres for Solo Trumpet & Orchestra. Dr. Scanlon has performed at the festivals of Verbier, Spoleto, Banff, Artosphere and as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where he received the Roger Voisin Award. 

As a contemporary music performer Dr. Scanlon is heard on recordings of Xenakis's Eonta for Mode Records, Andy Akiho's Speaking Tree, works by Rodiron Schedrin on medici.tv, with the Grammy winning Boston Modern Orchestra Project on BMOP/Sound and with the Chamber Orchestra of New York on Naxos. Dr. Scanlon actively commissions and premieres new works as a founding member of the Silver Spruce Trio, which has performed interdisciplinary collaborative concerts in the U.S. and Mexico. Dr. Scanlon has performed as a guest artist with notable brass quintets around the country including Epic Brass, Triton Brass, Paramount Brass, Calliope Brass, Texas Brass, Zocalo Brass, Vermont Symphony Brass and Cornerstone Brass.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Scanlon has presented masterclasses across the United States and mentored students who have won the National Trumpet Competition and gained entry to top music schools. Dr. Scanlon collaborated on the compilation and editing of Carmine Caruso, a sequel to Musical Calisthenics for Brass, published by Hal Leonard and accompanying video course, Caruso and Beyond. Dr. Scanlon was a faculty artist for the inaugural Next Generation Trumpet Competition. Prior his appointment at NIU, Dr. Scanlon served as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at San Jacinto College and as an adjudicator for Texas All-State auditions. 

Dr. Scanlon received a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University, a Master of Music from Rice University, a Professional Studies Certificate from Manhattan School of Music, and a Doctorate of Music Arts from Stony Brook University. His principal teachers include Thomas Rolfs, Mark Gould, Marie Speziale, Joseph Foley and Kevin Cobb.

Christopher is a Bach Artist and performs exclusively on Bach Trumpets and Mutec Mutes.
